META Tags are hidden text placed in the HEAD section of your HTML page that are used by most major search engines to index your site based on your keywords and descriptions.  It is very important to use META Tags as well as a good TITLE if you expect to be found in most search engines. Note that META Tags are not the only thing search engines will look at when ranking your sites - some search engines will ignore META Tags completely. Most search engines will also index your body text.

META Tags are used as part of your HTML code. Some search engine robots use the information contained within META Tags to index your Web page. In most cases a search engine robots will grab only the first few words, sentences or paragraphs and use those words as the description and keywords for your Web page. META Tags on the other hand tell the search engine robots what information to use.

When properly constructed you can actually control how many search engines display your Web page in their search results. We're sure you have used a search engine in the past and found the description to be anything but informative. With META Tags you can have most major search engines display your Web page description the way you want it displayed (within reason of course). You can also help people find your Web page by providing keywords that describe your page and help drive traffic to your Web site.

If you wish to learn more about META Tags and how to properly use them you should consider becoming a member. Members have access to an in-depth discussion about META Tags and how to use them to get top position on the search engines. There's more to META Tags than simply inserting them in your Web pages. Our members also receive our exclusive search. Engine Secrets Report. With this report our members have an inside look at how search engines work and how to write effective copy to help promote a click-through.

META Tags MUST be placed between your <head> and </head> Tags and preferably after your </title> Tag. All Web pages MUST contain both the opening <html> and closing </html> Tags to be considered robot friendly.

The META Description Tag is created using our META Tag Builder. We place a maximum character length on the META Description at 150 characters. Again we do this because not all search engines are created equally.

The META Description Tag should contain all 150 characters if possible. The reason for this all has to do with your ability to describe in detail what this page is all about using your most important keywords. The TITLE grabbed their attention, but the META Description needs to promote the click-through. You have to let the searcher know what you have to offer.

Example:

<META NAME="Description" CONTENT="XYZ provides quality building supplies and materials to contractors and home owners. We provide electrical, plumbing, framing and finishing materials.">

This contains the entire 150 characters. We are marketing those looking for building materials and supplies. And if we were to calculate keyword density on these main terms we would find this to have a very high and focused keyword density.

The META Description tells the searcher exactly what he wants. Our TITLE ranked high and was focused to the terms the searcher used and our META Description now confirms this. It also lets the searcher know the different "main" products you offer. This pretty much describes everything you sell and we did it with only 150 characters.

 Site maps

Google Site maps was introduced in June 2005 so web developers could publish lists of links from across their sites. The site map is used to make the search engine aware of the site and the pages on the site.

As of 2007 XML site maps are supported by Google, Yahoo, Ask.com, MSN. The location of the Site map can be specified using a robots.txt file to help search engines find the Site maps.
